Overview
- This is the waterfall most commonly known as either Kisangani Falls or Stanley Falls.
- The former name is actually accurate, but not commonly used.
- This cataract has commonly been misinterpreted to be Boyoma Falls, which occurs about 75 miles upriver from Kisangani.
- Wagenia Falls stretch the whole width of the Lualaba River and drop about 30 feet in two distinct but gradual steps.
History and Naming
- Wagenia Falls was originally known as Stanley Falls, and the nearby city of Kisangani was once Stanleyville.
- The names Stanley Falls and later Boyoma Falls have been applied to several cataracts along a 200-mile stretch of the Lualaba River that are often grouped together as one.
